Best Herbal Remedies for Better Digestion

Okay so, let’s talk about digestion. I feel like we don’t really think about it that much… until it goes wrong. Like when you eat something and then 10 mins later you’re bloated like a ballon or just sitting there like why did I eat that. It sucks, honestly.

Sure, there’s meds and stuff you can take, but a lot of people nowdays are going back to herbal remedies cause they’re more natural and sometimes actually work better tbh. Herbs have been used for literally centuries to help with digestion. Some of these might be in your kitchen already, or you’ve prob heard of them but didn’t know they help with your gut too.

Here’s a list of herbal stuff that can help your stomach feel better, and hopefully save you from regretting that extra slice of pizza (been there ).


1. Ginger – The OG Digestive Hero

Ginger is like that one friend who’s always got your back. It’s spicy, warm and helps your digestion move along quicker. People have used ginger for nausea, gas, bloating, even morning sickness.

It helps food move from your stomach to your intestines faster (aka gastric empyting?? I think that’s the term lol), so you don’t feel like a rock is just sittin in your gut.

How to use it:
You can just cut a slice of fresh ginger and make tea, or even chew it raw (warning: spicy af). Some ppl add honey and lemon which is nice too. It’s also good in food, like stir fry or soups.


2. Peppermint – Minty Fresh, Minty Good

So peppermint isn’t just for gum and toothpaste lol. It actually relaxes the muscles in your stomach and intestines which helps if you get cramps, gas or IBS type issues. It’s cooling and calming for the gut.

BUT — if you have heartburn or acid reflux, it might make that worse cause it relaxes that valve thingy between the stomach and esophagus… so yeah, watch out for that.

How to use:
Peppermint tea is chill, literally and figuratively. Steep fresh or dried leaves for 5-10 mins. There’s also peppermint capsules (make sure they’re the enteric coated ones so they don’t open in the stomach).


3. Fennel – Underrated but Amazing

Fennel is those tiny seeds they give you at Indian restuarants after you eat. It actually helps with digestion a lot – reduces gas, bloating, even mild cramps.

It’s got a kinda sweet licorice taste? Not for everyone but honestly I think it tastes good.

How to use:
Just chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds after eating. Or make tea by crushing some seeds and steeping them. You can also roast them a little for extra flavor.


4. Chamomile – Not Just a Sleepytime Tea

Most people drink chamomile when they wanna relax or sleep, but it’s also good for the stomach. It helps with inflammation, calms the gut muscles and is good for indigestion or even just like nervous stomach (which is a real thing btw).

If stress is messing with your digestion, chamomile is prob your best friend.

How to use:

Okay I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that the yellow weed from my lawn? Yes. But it’s also super good for digestion. The root is especially helpful. It’s a “bitter” which helps get your digestive juices going (like saliva, stomach acid, bile etc).

Also helps the liver, which is obv connected to digestion too.

How to use:
Dandelion root tea or tincture is what most people use. It does taste kinda earthy and bitter, but you get used to it. Drink it before meals to get the best effects.


6. Licorice Root – Sweet But Be Careful

Licorice root can help coat your stomach and esophagus, which makes it great for heartburn or ulcers. It’s like a soothing layer that protects your insides. Pretty cool huh?

BUT – regular licorice (the herb, not the candy) can raise blood pressure if you take too much of it. So def don’t overdo it. There’s a safer kind called DGL (deglycyrr-something idk lol), which doesn’t have the part that raises BP.

How to use:
You can take DGL chewable tablets before meals or make tea with the dried root. Just don’t drink it everyday for weeks unless you know what you’re doing or ask your doc.


7. Turmeric – Not Just for Curry

Turmeric is everywhere lately – golden milk lattes, supplements, skincare, whatever. But it’s not just hype. The curcumin in turmeric is anti-inflammatory and helps with digestive stuff, esp if you have inflammation-related problems like IBS.

Also helps the liver make bile, which helps you digest fats better.

How to use:
Golden milk is the classic – turmeric, warm milk (plant or regular), black pepper, honey. Black pepper is key cause it helps your body absorb the curcumin. You can also just add turmeric to rice, curry, eggs, whatever.


Some Combos That Work Even Better

Sometimes using 2 herbs together makes them work even better. Here’s a few good ones:

  • Ginger + Fennel = awesome for bloating + gas

  • Chamomile + Peppermint = good for stressy tummies

  • Turmeric + Dandelion = anti-inflammatory + liver support

Natural doesn’t always mean safe for everyone. So here’s some stuff to keep in mind:

  • Licorice – can raise blood pressure

  • Chamomile – can cause issues if you’re allergic to ragweed

  • Turmeric – thins blood, so avoid before surgery or if on blood thinners
